The Grant County Regional Airport, in conjunction with the Oregon Department of Aviation, the Burns Municipal Airport, Baker City Municipal Airport and Union County Airport, is studying the possibility of establishing rural commercial service from Eastern Oregon to Portland. The funding to set up this service is coming from HB 2075, which was passed in the Oregon Legislature in the spring of 2015.
Some points to be aware of:
- The State of Oregon will not provide a subsidy for this service. Any commercial air service must be self-sufficient.
- We do not have a preset conception of how this commercial service will look. It may be scheduled flights, or flights on demand. The working group is looking at many different options.
- At this time, many destination options are being considered.
- One of the outcomes of commercial service may be to bring tourists to Grant County. This will provide business opportunities for local residents. We suggest talking to the Grant County Chamber of Commerce or the Grant County Economic Development Office regarding ways to take advantage of this.
GCRA is currently surveying potential users of this service to determine the viability of commercial service to John Day. Please fill out the survey on this page to help us.
